The Rev. Dr. Karyn L. Wiseman is an ordained pastor in the United Church of Christ, who grew up in and was first ordained in The United Methodist Church. She has 20+years of experience pastoring churches in Kansas, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania. Dr. Wiseman’s studies for her doctorate took place at Drew University. Her degree is in Liturgical Studies, Preaching, and Worship.

She has led numerous workshops, presented at both regional and national events, and taught courses in several seminaries across the country regarding preaching, worship, social media for ministry, clergy self-care, other important pastoral topics. Dr. Wiseman has a deep interest in Queer studies related to preaching and worship, as well as delving into the issues of Race, Gender, Sexuality, and Leadership.

Dr. Wiseman is keenly interested in engaging the church for vital ministry ideas, equipping communities to take on new models for church, and employing postmodern ideas in communities of faith to reengage younger generations through preaching and worship. She has immense passion for using social media to engage new generations for preaching, worship, mission, and ministry.

She has written for The Huffington Post and other social media outlets and has written numerous commentaries for Working Preacher, Feasting on the Word, and Feasting on the Gospels. Her first book, I Refuse to Preach a Boring Sermon: Engaging the 21st Century Listener was published by Pilgrim Press in 2013. Her most recent book, Queering the Pulpit: A exegetical Approach to Preaching an Inclusive Word, was published in 2024by Cascade Books.

She is married to Cindy Clawson, a social worker in Philadelphia, and has a son, Shelby, who lives in Pittsburgh. She loves action movies, social media, Broadway musicals and plays, the Philadelphia Union, the New York Yankees, and the Dallas Cowboys. Her love of the church means she is often dreaming of new ways for the church to be all it can be in a new and changing world.

Dr. Wiseman’s book I Refuse to Preach a Boring Sermon: Engaging the 21st Century Listener was published by Pilgrim Press in 2013.

Her next book is Queering the Pulpit: Preaching the Abundant Love of God. Manuscript in process.
